Confections of a Creative Mind

Artwork, inspirations, crafts, and other such frippery I happen to make. I am also an upcycler, who creates artwork out of trash and recyclables.
This blog is a safe-zone for all types of people. No hate!

I update every Monday!

me-men-to—mo-ri:

So just a few things to say here. Lemme make a list so I don’t forget:

  • Handmade anklet
  • Illustration of me and child
  • Graffiti poster
  • Upcoming Etsy shop

Ok, here we go. :D

So! The handmade anklet. I made it for C, but then it broke, and then we broke up, so….I’m going to fix it and just use it for jewellry. xD I made it from the suede boos I talked about in my last post. To make lengths of rope or string from a material that isn’t long enough, cut a circle, then just cut into a spiral (ahhh spirals) and stretch a little. Voila! :D I then braided three together into a long cord, took some copper wire and a small simple key, wove it into the anklet, then tied the anklet up and knotted it. Easy peasy.

Next is an illustration of my child and me. No one’s child in particular, just mine. i got inspiration just randomly, and had to do the pose myself so I could emulate it on paper. This is one of those rare times that i whip out my phone constantly to track progress. :3 Really fun!

a graffiti poster I saw while walking and thought it was great. xD I had seen some other graffiti the other day in the ILC on campus, but apparently didn’t end up taking a picture. well, next time. :/

Aaaaand lastly: my friend D and I will be creating an upcycling crafts shop on etsy sometime later this year. We hope to be making clothing, upcycled sculptures, terrariums, labels, things with jars, illustrations, mini books, comics, poems, screenprints, and brooches similar to the following pictures:

We are looking forward to entertaining your eyes and filling our wallets, so look out for the store url sometime in the future!

Ok, so that’s it for most of the stuff I’ve been doing lately. Hope you enjoyed! :D

Accidentally reblogged this on my personal. -.-

So that friend I mentioned I was making presents for like, oh I dunno, a millenia ago?

Yeah, well, that was my mum. And I made stuff for her birthday.

I don’t have a picture of the very small but full box I sent her, but I will post a few things I made, and an example of what I did make.

So first! Of course the card. I always do this for my mother, it’s kind of a tradition- every birthday I make a homemade card and have all my friends and (sometimes) teachers sign it. It’s super funny and also really fun to do it, because most people have never met her, and say on the card, “I’ve never met you, but….”. It’s great. xD I do it because she mentioned at one point that one day nobody will remember her birthday. I try to make sure that that will never happen. So the first pictures, as you can see, are of the card. I used my mechanical pencil to do a chibi of me with lion parts, and I am presenting two banners- one that exclaims “happy birthday” to my mother with a crossed out age (an inside joke with my mum), and the banner below which states that it is from “Emily + friends”. Everyone loved the design and I think it was lovely and really showcased how my style and tastes have changed.

Next is a completely upcycled and homemade jar of lemon and sugar hand scrub, the inspiration of which can be found here. I literally took a glass spaghetti jar, made the scrub, and then decorated it. The decoration used were a cardboard tea cozy sleeve for the ingredients tab and label background, teabox tabs for the yellow/red decorative border on the label, suede string cut from an old pair of slip-on cowgirl boots, yellow fabric for the lid cover cut from a free t-shirt, and the rest is paper scraps colored with color pencils of course.

The next thing I made you can see the proxy picture for: two cut out paper hands that hold an accordion of words that say, mum I love you thiiiiiiis much! Super cute and fun, though the paper wasn’t the best, and it was too large so I had to tie it with ribbon.

I also stuck some cute origami of a bunny, a basket, and some flowers in there that my friend made out of boredom in illustration last semester.

There was a reusable flat bag for shopping or general DIY use (also as a soft buffer).

A small poem book with words that described her and spelled out “MOTHER”. (I’ll take pictures when i get back home, I forgot to do that.)

Aaaaaand lastly, my roomie gave me a small, purse-like, beaded Chinese good luck ornament to hang in the house. Smelled like play-doh. xD Really sweet of her to do, though. :3

So that was it for my Mother’s Day gift for my mum! I adored making it, I should do gift baskets more often. :D

Mum, if you’re reading this; I love you and I’m glad you enjoyed it! x3

Two Upcoming Posts!

I’m so excited to post these today, you guys have no idea. :D I think now I just have to do willy-nilly posting until I get my laptop back, but don’t worry- soon it will be much more frequent willy-nillying(?).

Can’t wait for you guys to see what I’ve been doing! :D

So school.

It needs to just stahp right now I am so swamped I can only get on when I am distracted during a study break omg I can’t wait until I get a new harddrive for my laptop so I can actually blog wtf

I am literally so tired right now…I will post something not next monday bu the monday after- it’s something I made for a friend and she’d freak if she saw it before I gave it to her.

So this’ll be a short one, but all the same….it’s great to be back, even if for a little while. :3

I have three orders of business: illustrations, one poem, and my partner.

Ready steady GO!

Firstly- my illustrations. Those are first as you can tell in the horrible images above. Because I do not have my laptop working, this means that I cannot possibly scan anything onto a computer (in other words I don’t know how to work the library scanners and I’m too lazy to ask a friend). So pictures from my kinda crappy phone camera. Bada bing. the first pic is of my verrry good friend and partner-in-crime, D. I am working on the picture so as to look like the one I did in my last picture post of me. Except hers will be individualized for her specifically, not from from my perspective. The second is of a poem that I have decided to write, and I will talk about that in the second order of business. :D Since it is an underwater-themed poem, I will make the borders seaweed and floating hair and sand and shells and creatures of the deep and wreckage and the such. It will be one panel for every stanza- which I predict will be around 12-15 of. I will release actual scans of both the sketches and finished artwork one-by-one so it’s like an actual comic. :D And then 2 finished comics about my new partner, C, and I. He is goofy, but so am I! >:D Then C and I again- I cannot seem to get my big smile down pat. I look stupid. >:<

Second order: poem. This poem is called “The Maiden and Her Key” (which may or may not be a working title). It is about a mermaid who has had this key her whole life and has searched for where it might fit but is just no in the throes of giving up when this sailor comes by with his kipper and is all, what’s wrong? She tells him, in suicidal thoughts, and being the greedy lad he is, knows of a place where her key just might fit….a cave full of treasure….I haven’t written much past him telling her, but I know how the rest of the story goes. When I’ve got it all written out, maybe I’ll tell you. ;D I just don’t want people stealing the lines. It’s a pretty typical mermaid/sailor “love” story where the maid kills him at the end and all. So make up your own, thieves! D:<

And lastly…C. I swear. I am so comfortable with him. He is literally the first guy I’ve ever not felt nauseous with (which is what happens when I get nervous). He’s sweet and attentive and loving and caring and good in….ahem. Let’s not get too far. xD Long story short? I love him, and it’s looking good for our future together- though I’d still like to date a chick. ;3 Laaaaaaaaaadies.

Whoo got that out of my way. :3 And extra announcement: 20 followers now! That’s so crazy! :D Soon I’ll have to follow up my promise and update twice a week, but for now? I’ll keep trying for this once a week at the library. :3 See you next week, folks.

Attempting Reconnection with my art blog…

Hello, all! I knooooooow it’s been awhile….and I apologize sincerely for that. :< But I think that I might be able go do everything from my iPod touch! I can just copy and paste pictures after sending them to an email that my iPod recieves mail from, and BAM! I’m in business again! :D Awesome. I’ve been missing this. :3 It’s like my journal; like a really comfortable break in my schedule. So! I guess I’ll start today! I mean….why not? x3 I’ll have a post up by the end of the day. See you then.

On hiatus.

So sorry for not blogging- I’ve been a bit depressed lately, and then all of a sudden super busy, and now I have a boyfriend, and also my laptop broke down in blue-screen-of-death-hysterics so I might’ve lost everything I was going to post. Dx

Please follow my art history blog if you would still like to hear/read my lovely voice/words. :D

So sorry! Will hopefully update this next Monday, if things go well.

Happy Monday!! xD It’s raining. -__- My art history teacher says that every time we see him at the beginning of the week. Today, in answer, I said “It’s cold. And raining.” I’m such a downer. xD

Okaaay let’s get started- So I penned in the previous artwork- I’m doing it art nouveau style, so it’s thicker around the edges and thinner in the middle areas. I’m also coloring the one of me in Paint currently- it’s almost finished, and it should be done by the next post. :3

I found pictures of me at SlutWalk, yaaaayy!! :D This was sooo fun. It was like, one mile or less of just yelling our opinions about slut-shaming/victim-blaming and not wearing a shirt. >:D YEH-YUH. I’m the one in the denim vest with all the buttons and the really long tube dress- also the sign that says “This is what a SLUT looks like”, which I now have on my door. x3 I totally encourage you all to join in your local SlutWalk, and support the fight against victim-blaming/slut-shaming! :D

Lastly, this is an iron-on patch I found (don’t remember where). I’m thinking about making it into something really girly that says “Fuck you” or something. I love those things.

Hope you all had a good weekend- totally can’t wait for this 3-day one coming up after my busy week (One Billion Rising in Tucson, my crush will know of the crushing status, Angel Project against Westboro Baptist dude, Tunnel of Oppression, Safe Zone Training, writer speaking event, Scented Leaf Harry Potter Alliance meeting)!! Love you all!

*PS*: The magazine has not come in yet, but I think it should be here soon. I can’t post anything else but the page I’ll be on, though, to respect the magazine.

BTdubs…

It’s not finished yet, but…how you guys like the new header?

Oh my gosh; three new followers!! :D Hello, and welcome!

Sorry if it’s a tad late, I’ve been busy all day. Dx

The most significant things I’ve done for this past week are embroidering a jacket and making this huuuge dinner for Imbolc, my second ever celebrated Pagan holiday!! :D

So, the jacket. Just a regular denim with snaps; pretty thin, though. So I’ve wanted to embellish this jacket in some way or another for FOREVER so when I started, I was like, “soooooooo….what should go on here to make it the super-awesome-amazing-fudge-chocolately-covered-super denim jacket I’ve only dreamt about?” And I found I was at a total loss. UNTIL…I pulled out this skirt with broken elastic from my late grandmother; all black with silver threads woven through to look like thousands of stars- or maybe just a glitter infection. I used a perfectly formed rectangle for the top back, then blanket-stitched with this beautiful turquoise-colored thread (you can just barely see it in the closeups). Then I decided I really liked the stud look, and so I looked up stud subs, and buttons/beads were a suitable alternative, so I dug some big fake pearls, some vintage buttons, mother-of-pearl decoration beads, and (as a last choice when I found the gap between the first and second rows of beads were too big), a small, delicate strand of clear beads between the top and second rows. And ba-BAM! Now my favorite jacket.

The Pagan holiday. “Imbolc” (imm-aulk) can mean a few things; but it is commonly translated as “ewe’s milk” or, “in the womb”. It is originally connected with the Irish goddess Brighd (breed, bree-id, briide, brij-iidh) of fire, handmade things, and who was pretty much THE goddess of Ireland. Crowns of candles were worn and houses were cleaned and fires were revered. But that’s not exactly how my friends’ and I celebrated it. So first Eddie came over and helped me wash dishes. Then Dayna came just as we were about to head to the kitchen in my dorm with a buttload of stuff. So we all headed to the kitchen together at 3:30 or so, and began to cook. I made the traditional Braided Bread (my first ever loaf; SO PROUD!! x3) and the green bean casserole, while Eddie and Dayna made the juice, the bok-choy and mushroom quiche, and the barley, zucchini, onion and turnip soup. I helped, of course, and so did they. :3 It was wonderful to cook together- also, nobody was in the kitchen but us, and it was nice and peaceful and amazing. :3 Afterwards, we took everything up to my room, packed for a picnic, and went across the street to sit in the grass. The sun set kinda early, but it was nice to light incense, candles, call upon our Gods, and just eat and have fun together. :3 Ostara’s next, and I’m hoping to do something similar.

So that was my weekend! Hope to talk to you guys soon! And I think CAMMP may have a meeting date next week! Ooh, and I’m going to the Tubac Art festival this Saturday, and all of next weekend my friend Dayna is staying over- and maybe, hopefully, when I participate in the Rise Up dance celebration that fights violence against women next Thursday (Valentine’s Day)…if all goes well…I will tell my crush I like him. :3 I’m SO excited. I’ve never done this before….but I’m determined to do this, even if it ends up bad- might as well figure it out now rather than break my heart worse later.

Yeah. I’ll update you all next Monday. :D

Good evening, all! :D Kind of excited; got my RA interview tomorrow in the early afternoon, and I reeeeeally hope I do well. I’m actually super nervous, I’ve never done a professional interview before. :/

But…YAY! I actually did some character sketches, I’m so happy. *^* I really need to draw people more, I get better every time. :3 The first two are characters I haven’t drawn all that often- actually, I don’t think I’ve ever drawn them, now I think on it. Goodie that I did, then. :D The first- I unfortunately don’t remember her name, I’m sure I gave her one, but all my novel notes are back at my house- is my star goddess of Wonderland. She was pushed down a well and fell into Wonderland. She was called a star because her aura is as bright as the brightest full moon, and while falling, she was very similar to a falling star. She sacrificed parts of herself to bind the four Chaos Gods, who were ruling quite viciously at the time. She bound the Air God with her hair to keep him bound to the earth; the Earth God with half her aura, to keep her from growing or breathing; the Sun God with one eye to watch her; and the Water God with her heart, because it belonged with him (they were in love). Cinead is the Sun God, and is very violent and crazy. She changes moods as fast as a cloud passes across the sun, and throws herself fully into everything she does. She came to Wonderland with her siblings from an alien world, and so naturally have their powers and are akin to Gods. They are called the Chaos Gods because they arrived at a time of Great Chaos and settled affairs- until Cinead went crazy with power.

The third picture is of me- AREN’T I CUTE??- in a tattoo-like design for my CAMMP club. It’s way more fun to put up drawings of the members than pictures. But maybe that’s just me. xD So the ring of stuff around me is supposed to represent my particular religion and what i work with- if that makes any sense. :/ I hope to start drawing my club associates soon, I just got vain and drew me first. xD

Aaaaand for those of you who live in the Tucson, Arizona area, I’m selling this vest-top for $15! :D I took a regular top, and upcycled it by cutting off the sleeves, cutting down both sides, and lacing it back up on either side with red and black Emily the Strange shoelaces. There are hook and eyes up the front; it’s clean and in great shape- despite being kinda messy round the edges. :/ I’ve worn it maybe twice (emo punk phase OVER). It fits no bigger than D-size boobs, and I’d say it’s about a medium-small. It can go over shirts or be just by itself, looks great with skinny jeans/leggings, and can probably be worn be with a Victorian-esque skirt. Contact me if your interested!! :D

Aaaaand lastly. I’ve decided not to do a super-secret guerilla project. I think I really wanna launch an art/Pagan/feminist zine for the Tucson area. I’ll have more time to develop this, versus this rushed guerilla project- which I can always do on my own time. :D I’m actually really excited for this project now- it’s gonna be so fun! x3 And I’m thinking about making it an online zine until I can get enough money to publish it. Can’t wait to start!! :D

If anyone has any interest in helping with, submitting to, or being interviewed for the zine, that’d be great- please contact me at the blog provided until I have an official email for it. Thanks! :D

WOO FINALLY MONDAY SO EXCITED. Not really; tomorrow I have Math and Spanish first thing. D:

But I DO get to show you all glimpses of what I’ve been doing! It’s actually pretty awesome- the first picture is of all the glass bottles I have, and it’s PRETTY AWESOME. So many! :D I’m hoping to make terrariums, hanging lamps, painted glasses, lanterns, incense/candle holders out of them ALL! >:D

The second picture is a glimpse into my guerilla project- I’ve decided on themed journals, and it’s gonna be awesome. :D

The next three are of the stuffed giraffe I made for my friend, and since I had forgotten to take a picture last time- I did this time. Made by sketching on a folded piece of fabric, cutting those out separately, sewing inside out while the ears and horn are attached, then flipped outside at the last 2 inches or so, and stuffed with various pieces of leftover cloth and sewn up. Then I sewed patches over the stains with jean fabric, and used two pear-like beads for the eyes. :D It looks retarded, I know- but my friend loves it, so who cares??

Aaaaand lastly- my friend from Art History has joined my potential UA Pagan club, and we all had a meeting today. Mostly talked about YGOTAS, Tumblr posts, and how bad Twilight is, but we eventually got to our name and slogan- which is…the Collegiate Association of Magic, Mysticism, and Paganism (CAMMP); and “Friendship, Fun and Freethinking”. I’ve already started a couple of sites- Google+, Twitter, and Facebook; and an email- cammp@live.com. Those who are UA students interested in the “occult”- we’re the club for you. ;D We’re hoping to get up a date and time for a general meeting soon! But anyway. The pictures are of my idea of a graphic design of our club acronym, CAMMP. The first is the moon, then a Celtic knot, then then the rune for M, and the Theban letter for M, and then the rune for P.

The last one is a self-portrait- I know it’s not all that good of a picture, but when I finish it I’ll scan it. I’m surrounded by roses and calla lilies- my favorite flowers. But I’m thinking of changing it so it looks more personalized to my witchy activities. ;D

So that’s it for now…or is it?? O.o No, there’s still more to come, thankfully.

And it’s come to my attention that we have 1 more person to go and I shall reach 10 followers who don’t know me. I’ve been thinking that I might do twice a week updates if I get to 20…but I dunno if I’ll get there. We’ll have to see. :3

I’m tempted to make a whole post of all the wonderful things* I’ve been doing this past week BUT I CAN’T BECAUSE I PROMISED MYSELF I’D ONLY DO THAT STUFF** ON MONDAYS. So it’ll have to wait. I just can’t wait to show*** you guys!! :D

*Hint: includes all those glass bottles I’ve been collecting…

**Hint: also includes the project…

***Hin- okay, I’ll shut up, now.
